GERD and hip fracture. We often
write how everything in the body is connected.
Here is another scenario. The discomfort for patients with reflux (aka GERD)
drives them to seek help. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are often
prescribed for many Pflugerville reflux sufferers.
Unfortunately, these PPIs may trigger pain
elsewhere, especially the hip for which the risk of fracture
is increased, despite the
fact that they help with GERD. Your Pflugerville chiropractor
watches closely our patients who report
hip pain, particularly if they are using PPIs,
as many time chiropractic treatment does
alleviate hip pain.
PPIs, GERD, and HIP FRACTURE RISK
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly
prescribed and used for GERD and peptic ulcer management. The
risk of hip fracture is higher for PPI users. Whether
users take a low or medium dose, the risk of hip fracture is
higher while those on a high dose were at even
greater risk for hip fracture. Researchers warn that doctors
and patients must realize this in order to be cautious in
recommending PPI use for a long period of time and be cautious in understanding what the
proper usage of PPIs is so that they don’t take it without a clear
indication for such use. (1) Researchers in the latest study
of the effect of proton pump inhibitor use on hip fracture risk made it very
clear: PPI use is associated with hip fracture development.
They begin their study by acknowledging that the effect of PPI use on
the risk of hip fracture is contestable which inspired
them to study if this were true.
They found participants who were over age 40 and had been prescribed PPIs for at
least 90 days. They then cross referenced any hospitalizations
in these patients for hip fracture. Their study revealed that
fractures developed oftentimes in PPI users than in non-users and that fracture risk associated
with PPI use rose the more time they
were on them. (2) Averting hip pain is certainly preferable, and chiropractic treatment may be gentle and relieving for many.
CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT OF HIP PAIN
Chiropractic care of the hip and hip pain can be relieving
for hip pain sufferers. As Dr. Robert Hayden explained in a
recent Prevention magazine article, chiropractic patients who
looked for care for spine, hip or shoulder pain reported less pain after 4 months than those who saw a
medical doctor…and their costs were less! (3,4)
Hip pain is a usual complaint heard in the chiropractic practice,
specifically in patients who are more than 60 years
of age. Manual therapy treatments, spinal manipulation
(especially gentle Cox® Technic), exercise, electrotherapy
and such are common ways to treat and relieve hip pain. Pflugerville Wellness Center will set up
the right approach to care for your
Pflugerville hip pain!
